Compelling

If you haven't already, take a gander over at  Comics Alliance, and read the essay from yesterday by Andy Khouri about Sexual Harassment in Comics.  It is a well-written, well-reasoned and powerful message.  Being a woman, it resonates with me...but it should resonate with practicaly everyone who isn't a complete asshole.

Unfortunately, there are way too many of the latter out there, and posting.

That was my high point of the day.  The low point was finding out that DC is cancelling the Adventures of Superman.  I had only fairly recently discovered this book and LOVED it.  It has the REAL Superman, in his blue and red longjohns, complete with the underwear on the outside, going around being fabulous, and kind and wonderful and all of the things that Superman really is.  It was written and drawn by some pretty great heavyweights in the Conics department.

Alas, that wasn't enough to save it. The stories were great, the concept was great, the art was great.  But it wasn't about the new Superman from the 52 Universe, so apparently DC has decided to can it.  Which of course leads me to believe that they really ARE a bunch of morons.

*sigh*

IN addition to the article at Comics Alliance, Dave, over at Dave Ex-Machina has a simply superb essay as well.

I've tried to get used to books I like dying a swift death. Marvel did a pretty fair job training me back around 2009, 2010. It stinks, but I try to enjoy what I got while I got it, and if I came to the book late, it gives me something to hunt down in back issue boxes to complete the set.

The whole rape threat thing is exhausting. I understand sometimes people don't want to hear opinions different from their own, but that they don't understand (or more likely don't care) that trying to silence those voices with threats of violence is a bad thing, I don't get. They can't just go sit in their own little echo chamber and ignore those dissenting voices until they wither up and die of old age?

Is it the thrill of being able to post anonymously, that brings out the worst in people? I just don't know.

I know that there have ALWAYS been cranks, people long before the introduction of the internet used to write 20 page single-spaced letters to the editor outlining their crazy ideas, and heck, back in the 17th century, people whined about new theories and books and such. So such behavior has always been with us.

But the internet just brings out the worst in some people. But to threaten a person with rape because you disagree about Spider-Man? That's a new level of crazy.

Incidentally, Notintheface over at
Stars and Garters also has a beautifully written essay on this whole problem. And Amanda Marcotte from Slate as well.

So...people KNOW this is bad...and yet it just keeps going on because there are no consequences to bad behavior.
