Red Lanterns #36
Well...that was interesting! I do have to say, that as much as I love this book, I really hate that cover. It looks like a hatless Yosemite Sam...not Guy Gardner. Fortunately, the interior is a vast improvement.
The New Gods have swooped onto Earth, and done their usual nefarious deeds, with little or no resistance from the Lanterns, or indeed anyone. You would have thought the Justice League would have been all over that. Heck, Batman and various Robins are all currently on Apokilips beating the crap out of Darkseid's minions! Batman! Darkseid! But all of the various Lantern Corps can't handle the New Gods?
I smell a rat.
But anyway...Guy is pissed. Even more pissed than usual, and that is saying something. Simon Baz isn't particularly happy either, but he's trying to be the voice of reason. He can't quite understand why Guy is so angry, till Guy breaks it down for him, that he's the one who seems to always survive, when his friends and the people that he inspires seem to be the ones who always pay the ultimate price. I never thought about it like that before, but I guess I can see why poor Guy is starting to feel just a tad overwhelmed. Plus he's got Survivor's Guilt out the ying-yang.
Back on New Genesis, High Father has the power that he tricked out of Kyle...and is simply champing at the bit to go and use it. Even some of his loyal followers are beginning to question the wisdom of what he is doing, but drunk with power and White Lantern juice, he isn't listening. There doesn't appear to be a whole lot of difference between High Father and Darkseid at this point. At any point.
On Earth, the done thing when you want to take a Boom Tube Ride, is to go and visit Cyborg apparently. I thought he was with Batman? But he's there, and reluctant to send Guy and Simon on their presumably doomed quest. Guy does agree that someone has to stay behind and protect the earth, but Simon feels he has to go to protect Guy from himself. B'dg agrees to stay and help out the Justice League, but he's a bit wary of Guy, which rather surprises me. Up until fairly recently, Guy WAS the top Honor Guard of the Green Lantern Corp...you would think that would count for something!
Of course Guy does get in a few digs about Chipmunks and nuts and...well, you know. Damn, I like B'dg a whole lot but I still miss Ch'p. So they rely on Cyborg to send them someplace nice and quiet and inconspicuous.
On New Genesis, Malhedron, the guy who had previously beaten them up is shacked up with Dia, his apparent main squeeze, and they are talking about how High Father is drunk with power. Cyborg's inconspicuous landing, has Guy and Simon falling right on top of these two...in bed no less.
Not exactly inconspicuous, but typical of the Guy Gardner form of luck. Naturally, things don't go particularly well for our two Lanterns, and Malhedron is about to chop their little heads off, when High Father shows up and puts them in a Miracle Cell.
Does this mean that Scott Free is lurking in the shadows? I would go insane of Scott showed up. Or Barda.
