The Joy of John Stewart Week

Aaaaand, we're back with more about John Stewart, Green Lantern Extraordinaire. I've spent a bit of time talking about the things that John is not...maybe it's time to talk about the things that he IS.

He's smart for one thing. Being an architect is not a simple career choice, it takes a lot of hard work and talent. I love that whenever a new headquarters shows up, John has always had a hand in designing it, from the Justice Hall, to the JSA Brownstone to the new Warriors bar on Oa.

John knows what he likes, and he's not ashamed of what he likes. Yes, he likes Streisand, and Bobby Short, and he loves coffee and ABBA. For some reason I've always pictured him as having a nice bass singing voice. He plays piano. He likes baseball. He's well-spoken, but doesn't suffer fools gladly. He's definitely the calmest of the four Earth-based Lanterns.

He's a damn good team mate.

John will go to bat for you and give you the benefit of the doubt, something that has come in quite handy for Hal, Guy, Alan and Kyle over time. Unlike Hal, John wasn't much of a player, he fell in love with Katma Tui, and married her, with a great deal of joy and delight, and he mourned her totally untimely passing. He then had a thing with what's-her-name, Meryane or Merynne or whatever. He's currently unattached, because he's still pining for Katma, and he's brimming with hope that he'll see her again, which he probably will, just not the way that he's expecting.

Finally...I've been saying this all along, and I can finally prove it. John has a sense of humor, dammit. He'd HAVE to, to put up with this sort of thing.

John Stewart

John Stewart is not a man who is afraid to look foolish for a good cause.

I imagine that hanging out with Roy is a lot like hanging out with Guy, which John has plenty of experience with.

I've read several opinions from people who think that Kyle and John should switch places/partners, but I think the partner combos are fine the way they are. I think Guy and John would be fine as partners (John is patient, after all), but I don't think Kyle would be okay with taking a backseat to Hal long-term. Hal has a bad habit of marginalizing his partners, be they John or Ollie or Barry or whoever, and John seems to be okay with that, whereas Guy and Kyle would get frustrated. John is the perfect partner for Hal right now, which is really funny considering that they started off on the wrong foot together all those years ago.

Yeah, John knows Hal is a frickin' showoff (though Hal would probably deny he is) -- and he also knows Hal has a tendency to make an ass of himself BECAUSE he's a frickin' showoff. All the more reason to stay in the background and pull the strings from there. ;-) Guy and Kyle would be too busy trying to compete with Hal -- but JOHN is the one who really knows how to handle him.

I would like to also point out that John is a total badass. He fought Hal/Kyle/Parallax all by himself without getting absorbed or whatever happened to the other dim yet lovable Duo...

You also have to appreciate that John's time as the Mortal Guardian of the Universe. Mosiac was cool and everyone should read it.

John IS a Badass, he just doesn't make a huge song and dance about it, because he doesn't seem to need the applause. Unlike SOME people.

Yes, Hal, I'm looking at you.

Speaking of handling Hal, you should read GREEN LANTERN: MOSAIC #5, in which John psychically hands Hal's ass to him.

And a lovely ass-handing it was.
