Bleh
Good Grief, it's hot out. Hot and humid. Yuck. I know that it is Summertime, and that I should expect this sort of thing at the end of July, but we here in the Northeast, have been having the weirdest summer, all cool and rainy, while the REST of the country was busy sweltering. Although I missed sunshine, I must admit that I was quite happy to actually be sleeping with a blanket in the middle of July. Alas, those days are behind us apparently, 'cause it's quite revolting outside.
Still no Blackest Night for me, not until tomorrow.
So, to show, that I really shouldn't be complaining about the weather, here is Guy Gardner and Superman, falling into a VOLCANO! Talk about Hot! But presumably not muggy.
This was right after Guy lost the ring, and gained the yellow one, and everyone was looking at him a little bit sideways. Eclipso was having an awfully good time corrupting various heroes, and guess who saves the day?
Oh yeah.

Tora is not surprised! She is a very good judge of character. :)
I really hated Superman during that period of the Justice League. He was almost a Batman-level jerk. At least in these panels he's being decent to Guy. Though I suppose it's the least he could do, considering that Guy risked his own life to save his butt.
That yellow ring sure was awesome -- or it would have been, if Guy had only spoken Korugarian! It does not surprise me in the least that Sinestro would be smart enough to make sure that his ring would always protect him. I am of the opinion that nobody except Sinestro ever makes proper use of a power ring. He probably has his programmed to do a thousand little things for him (feed him information without him having to ask for it, for instance), rather than just use it to make constructs and fly.
Interestingly, Soranik showed some of the same instinctive mastery when she used it to make herself appear dead in Recharge. Others have done it before I'm sure, but she had only had the ring for like five minutes at that point. Daddy's little girl is clever!
Superman was REALLY obnoxious during this period. Maybe that's why Ice had that horrid little crush on him! Oddly enough Wonder Woman was pretty great when she came in. At least she had the decency to treat Guy like a human being for a change.
Say what you will about Sinestro, but there's no denying the man is smart. So many of the Lanterns seem to feel that the ring is simply a weapon, when it can be, and SHOULD be, so much more.
That little dead trick was pretty damned impressive, with Soranik. It impressed Kyle and Guy anyway.
For a person who used to be as high strung and warrior-like in the field as she has been known to be, Wonder Woman's always been very nice to everyone. She was the only big gun to support Ted Kord when he was investigating the unusual occurrences leading up to Infinite Crisis. There's also a reason she's one of the rare people to have a friendly relationship that extends both ways with Batman (I mean really friendly, not just tolerate each other). And the latest Wonder Woman issue features Morrow also stating that of all the big guns she was the only one who treated him properly.
As for Sinestro, a lot of other lanterns have shown the ability to match and even exceed the things he has done with his ring on imagination and willpower alone. But what sets him apart is his intelligence and foresight. He always plans everything he does and still has enough presence of mind to adjust late on. Most other lanterns have a little bit of recklessness in them (but none at Hal and Guy's levels, really). I'd venture to say, with both fairly evenly matched as ringslingers, the main reason Hal has come out on top against Sinestro in the past is because: a) he's almost too dense (in a good way) to give up or slow down, no matter what; and b) he's too impulsive for Sinestro's greatest strength, meticulous planning, to be of much use after the first 5 minutes.
That's a good point, Wik. Hal AND Guy do seem to have this...impetuous side to them, so I imagine that it makes it difficult to plan against that. Sinestro can be as meticulous as he can be, and still, there is that wild card aspect. Plus, Hal's occasionally too dumb to know when he should quit, which also tends to work for him. It's probably the main thing about him that simply drives Batman CRAZY!
Hal is also possibly the luckiest joker in the universe, whereas Guy is one of the unluckiest. And Sinestro, well... being a villain automatically makes you ridiculously unlucky. 90% of comic stories wouldn't work if the odds weren't tilted that way.
And being dumb helps Hal more than it hurts him, there's no doubt. It works for Kyle, too!
That's so true. Hal always does seem to come out smelling like a rose most of the time...while it's usually the opposite for Guy. Guy's a lot better at handling disappointment than Hal is though.
