Now That It's All Done...
Now that the first month of DC's relaunch is more or less finished, what did everybody think? I think that they had some really GOOD books, a lot of decent books, a fair number of mediocre books, and boy, some really terrible books. In other words, pretty much what was there BEFORE the relaunch.
These were my favorites. Your mileage may vary.
Action Comics
Wonder Woman
Aquaman
Green Lantern Corps
Green Lantern
All Star Western
Justice League International
Demon Knights
The Flash
Batwoman
I enjoyed the heck out of these books.
These were the ones that I liked, but not quite as much. But still enough to buy them on a regular basis and hope for the best.
Resurrection Man
DCUniverse Presents
Justice League Dark
Swamp Thing
Justice League
Firestorm
Hawkman
Batman & Robin
These books rather surprised me. I wasn't planning on getting most of them, but wound up being quite pleased. Not quite knocked out of my socks, but perfectly happy to read.
These were the books that were...ok. Not great, not terrible, but I like the characters, and heck, there is always room for improvement. If there is one thing that I tend to be, it is hopeful.
Green Arrow
Birds of Prey
Red Lanterns
Green Lantern: New Guardians
Blue Beetle
Batgirl
Nightwing
Then there were the ones that I was so hopeful about...and have decided to cross off of my list after one viewing.
Suicide Squad
Catwoman
Red Hood and the Outlaws
Mister Terrific
There are quite a fiew more that I never even looked at, because I really can't stand Deathstroke in ANY universe, and Zinda wasn't in Blackhawks, and I wouldn't touch Hawk and Dove with a 12 foot pole.
I find that I'm missing a lot of good characters, and I'm not quite sure how continuity works anymore, but all in all, I am...cautiously optimistic. Things turned out...for the most part pretty well. But man, when they messed up, they messed up BIG!
What were YOUR favorites?
12 Comments:
I liked most of my reads.
Favorites:
Justice League International
Justice League Dark (surprised me)
Too Early to tell:
Animal Man (Not sure how I'd feel for the long run.)
Red Hood & the Outlaws (except for one big thing I loved it. I trust the writer enough to keep reading.)
Okay:
Static Shock
Superboy
Teen Titans (The art is the weakest point.)
Meh:
Captain Atom (Dropping)
Blue Beetle (Might Drop)
Going to get:
Demon Knights
In some cases issues can't be judged by number ones. They can improve or get worse over time. I think I'll stick to most of these for at least an arc to decide.
Other ones that you didn't mention that were very good:
Animal Man
Frankenstein
Batman
OMAC
Superman wasn't too bad except for Clark's (not Supes') mopey attitude and Jimmy's Justin Bieber haircut and lack of marriage. Lois rocked in this.
All Star Western
Resurrection Man
Green Lantern
Green Lantern Corps
Men of War
I'll probably drop Birds of Prey.
Animal Man
Frankenstein
Demon Knight
All Star Western
I Vampire
Justice League Dark
Wonder Woman
uswzb
There were some books that were very good that I didn't list, because I just didn't buy them, or aren't a fan of the character. Did anybody buy ALL 52 new books?
It is quite possible that some of the more mediocre ones will also improve. I usually don't drop a book about good characters for a LONG time, because I'm fueled by hope for the most part.
So...I guess it was...a success?
Favourites:
All-Star Western
Aquaman
Demon Knights
Frankenstein, Agent of SHADE
Green Lantern Corps
Savage Hawkman
Stormwatch
Good (and in some cases better than expected):
Captain Atom
Green Arrow
Green Lantern
Green Lantern: New Guardians
Justice League
Justice League International
Resurrection Man
Teen Titans
Voodoo
Sadly a little disappointing:
Blue Beetle
Fury of Firestorm
Mr Terrific
Swamp Thing
So yeah, on the whole it worked for me.
Loved
Aquaman
Swamp Thing
Resurrection Man
Batman
Good:
JL
Green Lantern
Red Hood
Action
Nightwing
Grifter
JLI
Not so much:
Blue Beetle (dropped)
Suicide Squad (had so much hope for it so I am giving it one more try)
Im forgetting something, but those stand out.
My faves:
Swamp Thing
Batman
Batwoman
GL
GLC
Back for more:
Resurrection Man
Aquaman
GL NG
Wonder Woman
DCU Presents
JLI
Demon Knights
Deathstroke
Detective Comics
Maybe:
The Flash
JL Dark
Voodoo
Batgirl
Stormwatch
Birds of Prey
I guess not:
Captain Atom
Nightwing
Batman & Robin
Batman the Dark Knight
Blue Beetle
Red Lanterns
Action Comics
Superman
Hawkman
Blackhawks
Most assuredly not:
Mr Terrific
Catwoman
Suicide Squad
Grmpf... forgot JLA. Should go into the 'Back for more' category. Even though the story would only put it on 'Maybe' so far it has Hal which bumps it up ^^
Top notch list! Pretty much my thoughts as well :P
Aww.. I was waiting so much out of Kyle's new on-going!
Hey Sally!
I read all of them over the weekend, for a 'Tagesspiegel' feature, and overall, I was amazed how many solid (if not revolutionary) series they created.
Here's my ranking:
plain awful:
Suicide Squad
Red Hood and the Outlaws
Legion Lost
Deathstroke
Captain Atom
OMAC
Catwoman
I can see what they're trying... but it doesn't work:
Red Lanterns
Detective Comics
Static Shock
Green Arrow
Grifter
Legion
Blue Beetle
Men of War
good concept, good work... but still room for LOTS of sparks / improvement:
Resurrection Man
Frankenstein
Hawkman
Teen Titans
Hawk & Dove
Demon Knights
Blackhawks
The Fury of Firestorm
Superboy
things I will definitely read:
Justice League Dark
Green Lantern: New Guardians
Superman
Aquaman
Batwing
I, Vampire
Batman: The Dark Knight
Supergirl
Mr. Terrific
VERY intriguing:
Justice League International
Batman
Action Comics
Birds of Prey
Green Lantern Corps
Stormwatch
Voodoo
Batgirl
All-Star Western
top 10:
Green Lantern
Nightwing
Swamp Thing
Batman and Robin
Wonder Woman
Justice League
Animal Man
DCU Presents: Deadman
Batwoman
The Flash
So overall... surprisingly little reason to complain. If only there were less white guys, more women...
and, most of all: Less lab accidents and less dead policemen! I feel like every book had either mutilated cops... or a top-secret lab where some creature ran amuck.
Lazy storytelling!
Smesch, I agree with you completely. Considering that the whole premise for this relaunch was the ability to tell new and exciting stories...they didn't really DO much with some of them, instead using a lot of the same tired old tropes that they've always used. Plus, getting rid of, or at least mothballing a LOT of darned good characters.
I liked a lot of the new books, I was repulsed by the same ones that you were.
