Blackest Night #2

Good Gravy, we're learning all SORTS of interesting things, as Blackest Night continues to rock my world. First of all, that's one gorgeous cover, by Ivan Reis, not to mention all the art on the inside of the book.

We begin with a rather forlorn Atom, still at the other end of the telephone from the newly transformed Hawkman, who cunningly tells poor Ray to..."Come on over, Ray. Let's talk". DON'T DO IT Atom!

In Gotham City, Barbara and Jim Gordon are talking atop the building, while the Bat signal still lights up the sky. Well, until Hal manages to fall right into it!

Oh Hal.

At the same time in Amnesty Bay, Garth and Mera are contemplating Arthur Curry's grave. Garth wants to move his body to Atlantis, as is befitting their King, while Mera wants it to stay on land. What would Arthur want to do? Why don't we ask him? Yes indeedy, Aquaman is back, and man is he pissed!

Boston Brand is having one heck of a bad time, he's drawn irresitably to his body, but he doesn't WANT to bea part of it...it physically and mentally is causing him great pain. Other bodies are also rising, although one, rather interestingly does not...

Green Lanterns

Well! Isn't THAT interesting! Presumably if you died relatively at peace, you are resistant to being raised and turned into a Black Lantern! This is potentially a good thing.

Back in the water, Aquaman is busy lusting after Mera, while Tulla and Dolphin show up and start bossing Garth around. Ummm...and some dead sharks eat those Atlantean Red Shirts, which is cool, if disgusting. Mera proves to be much more of a badass than Tempest, who ends up being killed and Black Lanternized, while Mera manages to get the heck out of Dodge.

Zatanna, Blue Devil, the Phantom Stranger and the Spectre all have their problems as well. Oh, and the Spectre wants to have Hal back. We ALL feel that way Spectre!

And where is Hal? Probably picking glass out of his round firm buttocks.

Barry shows up finally, trying to keep this thoughts moving too fast for J'onn to read. He's also got a few goodies, such as Carbon Disulfide, Hexane and Methanol, whereupon, Hal drops his borrowed police car on top of them all...and BOOM! One heck of a fireball! Hoohah! They used fire against J'onn! A pretty good idea, all things considered. Too bad it doesn't really work...J'onn is there, and man, has he got some friends along with him.

Dammit, this is fun!

It's worth noting that Don Hall didn't exactly die a peaceful death, in the normal sense of the word. He was cut down by a shadow demon during the Crisis.

Peace here more likely refers to his soul being truly at peace. Whether this is something other souls can attain, or something special to his being, in some sense, an embodiment of Peace, is another question.

I read that Don Hall scene three times before I realized what was going on. It's my favorite sequence out of "Blackest Night," so far. Glad to see it included in your recap.

This seems to be something that leaves itself open to a great deal of interpretation. Needless to say, Dove seems to be at peace with himself, unlike the rest of the Risen however, such as J'onn and the Dibnys etc...ALL of whom died violently.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out in the story.

I'm pleased to see that I'm not the only one who noted the Dove sequence. I think that that particular scene is more important than we might imagine at first glance. I think that page (and the elements underlying it) will be at the heart (no pun intended) of a way of stopping the Black Lanterns.

I don't think we see Ray among the JLD at the end, do we?

anybody else giggle about Hal 'beaming his info' to Barbara's 'hard drive?'
It's hard not to imagine Hal thinking about sex constantly. Hell, he did recover by focussing on the nearest girl he could find, which was Babs...

Now, now Wik, lets' get our mind out of the gutter. Babs may be a pretty redhead, but I really don't think she's Hal's type. She's much too smart for one thing.

On the other hand...Hal's type does seem to be anyone with breasts and breathing, so I could be wrong.

Babs is smart. And capable. her sleeping with Hal is unlikely, even by his standards. But my feeling is Hal wouldn't be able to stop thinking about sex. His one limit when it comes to females, as seen with Supergirl, is minors :P

So...is he counting the days until she's 18?

well, that was pre-One Year Later... now, I don't know much about Kryptonian physiology, but I doubt Hal would ask his ring about Kryptonian aging when his ignorance could get him hooked up with her sooner. the only problem is that even a man without fear wouldn't want to piss her cousin off...
now that I think about it, I want to add Supergirl to that list of sketches of Hal's attempts various female superheroes... so far got Platina and Black Canary (yes, the man without fear would dare to go there...)
