A Pink Green Lantern?

Recently, at the Comic-Con International in San Diego, Geoff Johns was asked whether there were going to be any male Star Sapphires. His reply..."Anyone can join, but most men are not worthy" was very interesting. Not ruling out the possibility, but raising the stakes. Could any of our own beloved Earth-based Green Lanterns find themselves wearing a violet ring?

I really don't think that it will be Hal. I know that he's managed to use a whole passel of rings lately, but interestingly, NOT the violet nor the indigo rings. Hal may be brave, reckless, gallant and headstrong, he may be one heck of a Green Lantern, but Love and Compassion are not really his forte.

Love, to Hal, means sex and conguest, which may sound harsh, but there it is. Most of the fun for Hal, is the pursuit, once he has landed his girl, he has a tendancy to lose interest. I think one of the reasons that he maintains his interest in Carol, is that she's been the one who gives him the best run. I just don't see him as being capable of the amount of sacrifice that seems to be necessary to become a Star Sapphire.

The Star Sapphires have evolved quite a bit lately, they are no longer forceably inducting people into their service as before. Miri was picked because of her great loss, and capability to feel love, Carol seems to be in because she still cares for Hal, and will do anything it takes to keep him safe. Others, like Fatality, have been rehabilitated, I think that even Kryb has the capacity, she's doing what she does out of a twisted version of love. But the one time that Hal actually did sacrifice himself for Carol, he regretted it, almost as soon as the words were out of his mouth. So I doubt...I really really doubt that Hal will be wearing pink.

I can't really see it for John either. John is stolid, dependable and a little on the stoic side. He still obviously loves Katma, they got married, and they wanted to settle down together. He had his flings with Merayn and Rose, but it didn't seem as though his heart was in it. I can see him feeling deeply, but I'm just not sure that the proper amount of passion is there.

Kyle is a little more likely. Kyle likes being in love. He's affectionate and warm, and he really likes the idea of it. There is that little problem with his patented "kiss of death" thing going on however. And again, I don't think that Kyle really feels things THAT deeply. He seems to fall in and out of love a little too easily. Alex seemed to be the best girlfriend he ever had, especially compared to loser like Jade and Donna. We'll see how Soranik handles him. She could be the one who breaks the jinx.

If anybody is a possible candidate for a violet ring, it would have to be Guy. Now, Guy is a manly manly man. He's only too happy to ogle and leer and flirt with anything remotely female...but unlike Hal, it's mostly just for fun. He's not being serious about it. His heart belongs to Tora. It belonged to Tora even when she was dead, and now that she's back, he's finally found a little bit of happiness. They've certainly been playing that up lately, which makes me just a tad nervous.

Guy is the most emotional one of the four Earth-based Lanterns. Yes, he's a lot smarter than he looks, and he's not above being a bit cunning or manipulative when the occasion calls for it, but for the most part, Guy lets his emotions out, certainly much more than most male superheroes. The speech he gives to Tora when he discovers that she's alive was incredible, he poured his heart out, without any kind of self-conciousness, I can't really see anyone else doing that...certainly not Hal! Yet, in Blackest Night #1, Hal points out that Guy is the lucky one in Love, and he and Tora were glommed onto each other pretty closely when they were visiting Ted's grave. Tora's been mentioned quite a bit too, Black Hand says that she's one of the ones who ought to be dead.

So...I'm nervous, because I can see Guy becoming a Star Sapphire if they go and kill Tora off. And, as adorable as he might look in pink, I really do think that it would clash with his hair. And I much prefer Tora ALIVE.

Now, Salakk on the other hand, would look great in pink. It matches his skin tone.

Ok, that IS hilarious. What a way to end the War of Light!

I'm not sure that there is a way to get a dignified male violet costume.

Have to disagree with you about Kyle, he'd the first to be recruited into the Star Sapphire Corp. Yes, there's that whole "kiss of death" thing, but what does that have to do with his capacity for love?

I think when he's in love he's in love deeper than any of the other Earth Lanterns. The way he fell for Donna and the moment when he gave her that locked made of lantern energy made my, then, adolescent heart soar. He wasn't ready to let her go when she left him, and, if John Byrne hadn't been such a selfish asshat, he would have tracked her down and once again shown her how much he loved her.

His relationship with Alex is harder to judge. She was around, what, 6, 7 issues? And their relationship had already been pretty long term when he got the ring. Still, I can't deny he loved her.

Jade... Well, she was convenient. (And he was convenient for her, too.) They shared an apartment, they were lonely, they convinced themselves that they were more than friends with benefits. They cared for each other, but I never sensed anything more than a shared fondness. Still, isn't fondness a form of love.

Kyle gives his love freely. He loved Terry as a little brother. He loves the other Earth Lanterns and many Corp members as brothers and sisters (and other). He loves Alan as a father. He loves Superman as a mentor. He loves Connor in a dare-not-speak-its-name sort of way. He, of all the Lanterns you wrote about, shares his love with nearly everyone he meets.

(Hell, other than Major Force, I can't think of one villain he hates)

I think that Kyle does love easily. I think that's maybe the problem. Hal loves easily too, although in a completely different way.

There's a line in Sinestro Corp War when Ganthet and Sayd are describing the War of Light and Guy says "As long as I don't end up a pink lantern." or something to that effect. I can definitely see Johns using something that looks like a total throwaway joke line as foreshadowing.

Oh, c'mon, you KNOW it's gonna be Guy. You just KNOW it. :-)

Totally ridiculous things DO seem to happen to Guy. Ridiculous things seem to happen to Hal too, but mainly because he's a klutz. But poor Guy often seems to end up being the butt of the joke.

All I ask, is that they not kill off Ice, and if he IS in violet, let it be...tasteful.

While I totally sustain your train of thoughts about all the lanterns, it is crlear to my that, in the event of tora's death, Guy would undoubtfully get a red ring faster than you could say the GL Oath.
Is he not always fighting his anger? I am certain that he'll be more fond about getting a red uniform

I dunno... he seemed to go into a state of depression more when Tora died last time. well, there was still a fair bit of bluster, but Tora brings out the soft side of him. So I don't see him getting really angry and getting the red ring- Tora's his most sensitive spot.
What I would be interested in seeing is how Hal would hold up if he thought Carol had been mortally wounded. He's stoic enough to work past it, and he has moved on from Carol, but there's little doubt he does still care for her somewhat. The violet ring tries to fill the hole in the user's heart, and while he's hardly the emotional type, losing Carol would create that hole (well, think there would be more of a hole if he lost Ollie, the way those two act around each other). He did get angry and get the red seeing his former colleague Laira killed, but for Carol it would be a bit of a balance between grief and rage.
But I do agree, Guy's a more likely recipient than any of the other Earth lanterns. And I wouldn't put it passt Johns and Tomasi to bring that Sinestro Corps War statement back around to bite him in the cosmic pink a**...

Now, see, I'm not that sure that Guy would get a red ring. Yes, he gets angry, he's quite quick to blow up and yell, but he also gets over it fairly quickly. Sinestro, rather interestingly enough described JOHN as the angry one. It may take him longer to get mad than Guy, but it is also a lot more potent when it does happen. And Kyle has a surprisingly hot temper as well, it just takes a lot to get it going.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

If all of Kyle's dead girlfriends show up at once as Black Lanterns, I could see him having a huge hole in his heart that might need to be filled by a passing Star Sapphire ring.

He could also be used as their one and only male member- so to speak ;)

I'm actually designing a male Star Sapphire costume. It's kinda a cross between the new Star Sapphire and a Hal Jordan Green Lantern costume.
